What happened here?

When Elvis Presley arrived in Germany for his military service in October 1958, this was his first proper home. He rented the entire second floor of the Hotel Villa Grunewald on Terrassenstraße and lived here from 11 October 1958 to 3 February 1959. Within a week of his arrival, his father Vernon, grandmother Minnie Mae, and friends Red West and Lamar Fike had joined him.

The hotel

The Villa Grunewald is a Gründerzeit villa built in 1888. Elvis's stay was cut short by conflicts with the hotel owner Otto Schmidt — loud music and constant fan crowds outside made things difficult. Elvis eventually moved to a private house at Goethestraße 14 in February 1959. The hotel was fully renovated and reopened in August 2017.

Visiting today

The hotel is open and you can stay here. Room 10, the Elvis Room, is still in its original state and can be booked for the night. The hotel sits right on Elvis-Presley-Platz, next to the Elvis Stele memorial.
