What happened here?

Woodstock '94 was held on August 12–14, 1994, at Winston Farm in Saugerties, New York — close to the original Woodstock festival's spiritual home but not at the Bethel site — to mark the 25th anniversary of the original. An estimated 350,000 people attended, making it one of the largest music festivals in US history. The lineup spanned rock generations: Green Day (who became festival legends after a mud fight with the crowd), Nine Inch Nails (performing covered in mud), Metallica, Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Peter Gabriel, Crosby Stills and Nash, and many others. Two days of heavy rain turned the site into a mudfest, which became the defining image of the event.

The 1994 festival was a genuine attempt to recapture the spirit of 1969, with free water and medical services provided on site. The mud and chaos added an unplanned authenticity, particularly to Green Day's set — Billie Joe Armstrong was pelted with mud and responded by throwing it back at the crowd, launching the band to mainstream recognition. Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor leaned into the filth, appearing fully caked in mud for one of the most memorable festival performances of the decade.

Winston Farm in Saugerties is a large agricultural property that has not been developed as a music venue since 1994. The land is private and not accessible to the public. The nearby town of Saugerties is a charming Hudson Valley village worth visiting, and Big Pink — the Band's legendary recording house — is just a few miles away in West Saugerties.
