What happened here?

Wade Walton's barbershop at 317 Issaquena Avenue in Clarksdale was one of the most celebrated blues landmarks in the Mississippi Delta — a working barbershop where Walton, a fine harmonica player himself, would cut hair and play blues for customers and visitors. Walton became a living link to the Delta blues tradition and a natural ambassador for Clarksdale's blues heritage, welcoming researchers, journalists, and music tourists over several decades. Sam Charters recorded Walton for Folkways Records in 1963, capturing both his barbershop atmosphere and his harmonica playing.

Walton knew the major figures of the Delta blues personally — Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson II, and others were customers and acquaintances. His barbershop served as an informal community centre and a place where blues knowledge was kept alive through conversation and music. Clarksdale's position at the intersection of Highways 61 and 49 made it a natural hub for Delta musicians and the cultural life around them.

Wade Walton died in 2000. The Issaquena Avenue barbershop no longer operates in its original form. The address is in the historic Black business district of Clarksdale, close to the Delta Blues Museum. A Mississippi Blues Trail marker acknowledges the significance of Walton and his barbershop to the preservation and transmission of Delta blues culture.
