Get DirectionsAt 9:30 a.m. on May 3, 1969, Jimi Hendrix touched down at Toronto International Airport (now Pearson) and walked into one of the most consequential moments of his career. Canadian customs officers searched his luggage and reportedly found small amounts of heroin and hashish — substances Hendrix maintained had been planted, or that fans had slipped into his bag without his knowledge. He was detained at the airport for hours while a mobile lab confirmed the substances, then formally arrested and charged with two counts of illegal possession of narcotics, each carrying a possible twenty-year sentence.
At the time, Hendrix was at the absolute peak of his powers — the Electric Ladyland album was less than a year old and the Experience had recently headlined Woodstock. The arrest hung over him for the remainder of 1969, shadowing a period that was already marked by internal tensions, exhaustion from relentless touring, and the dissolution of the original Experience lineup. He was released on $10,000 bail and went straight to Maple Leaf Gardens that evening to perform the scheduled show, reportedly telling the audience he was glad to be there.
The trial at Old City Hall courthouse in downtown Toronto ran from December 8, 1969, through three days of testimony. After eight hours of deliberation, the jury acquitted Hendrix on all charges — a verdict that provoked tears from fans crowding the courthouse steps. It was one of the rare occasions in rock history where the legal system found in the artist's favour. Hendrix died just nine months later, in September 1970, making the Toronto acquittal the last major legal drama of his life.
