What happened here?

The Flagg Grove School is the one-room schoolhouse Anna Mae Bullock — who would become Tina Turner — attended as a child in the 1940s. She was born on November 26, 1939 in Nutbush, Haywood County, Tennessee, and grew up in the surrounding farmlands. The school was relocated to Brownsville and restored as part of the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center, which opened a dedicated Tina Turner Museum in 2019, celebrating the most important musical legacy to emerge from the state's rural west.

Tina Turner's journey from Nutbush to global superstardom is one of rock and soul's defining stories. She joined Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm in the late 1950s, becoming one of the most electrifying live performers in history. After leaving Ike in 1976, she rebuilt her career with Private Dancer (1984) and became one of the best-selling artists of all time. Her song "Nutbush City Limits" (1973) is an autobiographical account of the strict, isolated community where she grew up.

The Tina Turner Museum at the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center is open to the public and houses memorabilia, stage costumes, and personal artefacts. Nutbush itself — roughly 50 miles east of Brownsville — has a historical marker on the site of her family's church and is a pilgrimage destination for fans. Turner passed away on May 24, 2023 at her home in Switzerland.
