What happened here?

Third Man Records Detroit at 441 West Canfield Street opened in 2015, returning Jack White's label to the city where he grew up and where the White Stripes were formed. The Detroit location operates as a shop, performance space, and recording facility in the Midtown neighbourhood — the area around Wayne State University and the Detroit Institute of Arts that has been the centre of Detroit's arts and cultural community through the city's decades of post-industrial transformation. White's connection to Detroit is fundamental to his artistic identity, and the Detroit Third Man location is a statement about that connection as much as a commercial enterprise. White grew up on the west side of Detroit and formed the White Stripes in 1997 with his then-wife Meg White, initially presenting themselves as siblings. The band's first performances were at the Gold Dollar bar on Manchester Street, and their early recordings captured a deliberately primitive two-piece sound — guitar and drums only, with White singing — that drew on Delta blues, Appalachian folk, and garage rock in equal measure. The White Stripes' success, culminating in the global breakthrough of 'Elephant' (2003) and 'Seven Nation Army,' made Jack White one of the most celebrated musicians of the early twenty-first century while consistently referencing Detroit, its history, and its aesthetics. The Detroit Third Man is in the Midtown neighbourhood that has emerged as a creative hub as Detroit's population has declined and real estate has become accessible. Wayne State University, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Masonic Temple, and numerous music venues and studios are within walking distance. The store stocks the full Third Man catalogue alongside vintage and local music memorabilia. West Canfield Street is part of a block that has become one of Midtown's most active pedestrian corridors.
