The Stone Pony — Springsteen's Asbury Park, New Jersey

The Stone Pony at 913 Ocean Avenue in Asbury Park, New Jersey, is the bar most closely associated with Bruce Springsteen and the Jersey Shore music scene that produced him. The club opened in 1974 and Springsteen — who was already signed to Columbia Records and had released two albums — began sitting in regularly with the Asbury Jukes and other local bands. His surprise appearances became legendary, and the Stone Pony became synonymous with the raw, blue-collar rock and roll that defined the Jersey Shore sound. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the club's house band and its spiritual centre.

Asbury Park in the 1970s was a faded seaside resort on the New Jersey coast, its boardwalk and beachfront hotels falling into disrepair after the city's 1970 race riots accelerated a long decline. The Stone Pony and the handful of other clubs along the waterfront — the Fast Lane, the Upstage Club — created a musical community that drew Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, Clarence Clemons, Danny Federici, and the musicians who would form the E Street Band. The atmosphere of camaraderie, desperation, and rock and roll faith that characterised the scene became the subject matter of Springsteen's early albums.

The Stone Pony continues to operate at 913 Ocean Avenue, hosting live music most nights alongside an outdoor Summer Stage concert series on the adjacent lot. Springsteen still makes occasional surprise appearances at the club, and each one generates national news coverage. Asbury Park itself has undergone significant gentrification since the 2010s, but the Stone Pony remains its musical anchor and one of the most historically important rock clubs on the East Coast.
