Get DirectionsThe Cavern Club opened on January 16, 1957, in the cellar of a former fruit warehouse on Mathew Street in Liverpool's city centre. Originally a jazz venue, it transitioned to skiffle and rock and roll by the late 1950s. The Beatles began performing there in 1961 and made 292 appearances at the club before their last performance on August 3, 1963, by which point they were already internationally famous. It was here that manager Brian Epstein first saw them perform in November 1961 -- a moment widely credited as pivotal in their commercial breakthrough. The original club was demolished in 1973 to make way for a Merseyrail ventilation shaft.
The current Cavern Club, which opened in 1984, was reconstructed at the same Mathew Street address using approximately half of the original bricks. It was the Cavern Club organisation that later commissioned the Beatles statues at the Pier Head. Mathew Street has developed a cluster of bars and music venues around the Cavern's fame and has become the anchor of Liverpool's music tourism district. Brian Epstein's NEMS record shop was nearby, and the area was the epicentre of the Merseybeat movement.
The Cavern Club operates today as a fully active live music venue and Beatles heritage site, open daily with live music from midday. Entry charges apply; children under 12 enter free. The venue is entirely cashless. It consistently ranks among Liverpool's top tourist attractions and presents original and tribute music alongside its heritage role.
