What happened here?

The Beatles Story is Liverpool's permanent exhibition dedicated to the lives and legacy of The Beatles, located in the Albert Dock on the city's waterfront. The exhibition opened in 1990 and has grown into one of the most visited attractions in the north of England, taking visitors through recreated environments from the band's history — including a replica of the Cavern Club stage, the Casbah Coffee Club, and Abbey Road Studios. The exhibition uses personal items, memorabilia, and audio guides narrated by John Lennon's sister Julia Baird.

Albert Dock itself is a Grade I listed building complex on Liverpool's UNESCO World Heritage waterfront. The Beatles Story occupies the basement level of the Britannia Pavilion, and a second exhibition space — Fab4D — operates in the adjacent building. The collection includes George Harrison's first guitar, John Lennon's round spectacles, and original handwritten lyrics. The exhibition covers the band's Hamburg years, their rise to global fame, the solo careers, and John Lennon's assassination in 1980.

The Beatles Story draws over 300,000 visitors annually and is a central part of Liverpool's Beatles tourism industry, which generates an estimated £80 million per year for the city. It sits within walking distance of the Cavern Club, Mathew Street, and the other key sites in Liverpool's Beatles geography.
