What happened here?

On May 7, 1965, Bob Dylan filmed the legendary "cue card" sequence for Subterranean Homesick Blues in this nondescript alleyway behind the Savoy Hotel. While Dylan was staying at the hotel during his UK tour, director D.A. Pennebaker captured the shot for the documentary Dont Look Back. The video features Dylan flipping hand-drawn cards while poet Allen Ginsberg chats in the background. Interestingly, the location was a last-minute choice after police moved the crew away from their original spot on the Embankment. To this day, the brickwork and the "Savoy Steps" remain largely unchanged, serving as a quiet pilgrimage site for music fans just steps away from the busy Strand.
