What happened here?

Studio 606 at 8721 Darby Avenue in Northridge, California, is Dave Grohl's private recording facility and the Foo Fighters' primary creative headquarters. Built in Grohl's garage and expanded over time, the studio centres on a Neve 8028 console — the same model used at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, where Nirvana recorded Nevermind, and which Grohl purchased when Sound City closed. The acquisition of the console was the subject of Grohl's 2013 documentary Sound City, which traced the history of the Van Nuys studio and its equipment as a way of arguing for the irreducible value of analogue recording in an era of digital production.

Studio 606 has been used to record multiple Foo Fighters albums and serves as the band's rehearsal space, production base, and event venue. It represents Grohl's conviction — consistent throughout his career — that rock music is made best when the musicians are physically present together in a good-sounding room, playing in real time. His approach to recording has been consistently anti-Pro Tools in its emphasis on live performance, minimal editing, and the capture of what actually happens when people play together. The studio is the practical expression of that philosophy.

Northridge is a suburban neighbourhood in the San Fernando Valley, chosen for practical reasons of space and cost rather than for any particular musical geography. The studio is a working private facility not open to the public, but it has featured in Foo Fighters documentaries and music videos and is well documented as a location. Grohl's home near the studio makes it the centre of gravity of his working life — the room where the Foo Fighters' catalogue has been built over more than two decades.
