St. Andrew's Hall — 8 Mile 'Shelter' Club, Detroit

St. Andrew's Hall in downtown Detroit is the real venue that houses the Shelter, the basement club immortalised in the 2002 film 8 Mile as the site of Eminem's rap battle scenes. In the film, the Shelter's weekly rap battle competition is where Jimmy 'B-Rabbit' Smith Jr. (Eminem) overcomes stage fright and personal demons to deliver his famous freestyle takedown of Papa Doc. The climactic battle scene — 'Everybody from the 313, put your hands up and follow me' — is one of the most iconic moments in hip-hop cinema.

The real Shelter club hosted actual rap battle nights in the 1990s that Eminem participated in as a young, unknown MC. St. Andrew's Hall itself, on the floor above, is a historic 1907 venue that has hosted everyone from Bob Dylan and the Ramones to the White Stripes and Eminem himself. The building's dual-venue format — the larger hall upstairs and the intimate Shelter below — has made it central to Detroit's music scene for decades.

Both St. Andrew's Hall and the Shelter remain active live music venues at 431 East Congress Street in downtown Detroit. The Shelter retains its raw, basement-club atmosphere, and hip-hop fans regularly visit to see the space where B-Rabbit's battles were set.
