Get DirectionsIn late December 1974, Bob Dylan returned to Minneapolis and re-recorded five tracks for Blood on the Tracks at Sound80 studio. He had already completed the album in New York but was unhappy with the results. The Minneapolis sessions, recorded with local musicians over just two days, gave the album the raw intensity that defines it. Tracks including Tangled Up in Blue, Idiot Wind and Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts were re-cut here.
Sound80 was one of the premier recording studios in the Midwest. It also hosted sessions for Cat Stevens and Leo Kottke among others. The building later became Orfield Laboratories, home to an anechoic chamber certified as the quietest room on the planet — a far cry from the electric intensity of the Dylan sessions.
The building is at 2709 East 25th Street in Minneapolis. It now operates as Orfield Laboratories. Public access is limited, but the address is a significant stop for any Dylan fan visiting Minneapolis.
