The Slim Dusty Centre sits on Akubra Drive in Kempsey West, in the Macleay Valley region of the New South Wales Mid North Coast. Opened in October 2015, it is a purpose-built museum celebrating the life and music of David Gordon Kirkpatrick — better known as Slim Dusty — who was born in the nearby Nulla Nulla Valley in 1927.
The centre houses memorabilia, personal items, and interactive exhibits tracing Dusty from his childhood on the family farm through to becoming Australia best-selling country music artist. His career spanned over five decades, produced more than 100 albums, and earned him recognition as the first person to have a state funeral in New South Wales who was not a politician or military figure.
The centre is open to visitors and charges an admission fee. It is located just off the Pacific Highway, making it a convenient stop for anyone driving between Sydney and Brisbane. The building itself is modern and purpose-built, set in landscaped grounds.
About 30 kilometres west of town, Slim Dusty childhood home at Homewood on Nulla Nulla Creek Road is the heritage-listed farmhouse where he grew up and wrote his earliest songs. It is privately owned and not open to visitors, but it is the place where it all started.
