Get DirectionsSid Vicious — born John Simon Ritchie — died of a heroin overdose on February 2, 1979, at 63 Bank Street in Greenwich Village, New York City. He was 21 years old. He had been released on bail the previous day after being charged with the murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, who was found stabbed to death in their room at the Hotel Chelsea on October 12, 1978. Vicious's mother, Anne Beverley, was present at the Bank Street apartment on the night of his death and later claimed she had supplied the heroin at his request.
Sid Vicious had been the bassist of the Sex Pistols for their final, chaotic year — replacing Glen Matlock in early 1977 and touring with the band through the infamous US tour that ended in San Francisco in January 1978. He could barely play bass and was hired primarily for his image and attitude, which embodied the nihilistic spirit of punk more completely than any of his bandmates. After the Sex Pistols' breakup, Vicious remained in New York with Spungen, spiralling deeper into heroin addiction and performing sporadic solo shows.
The apartment at 63 Bank Street in Greenwich Village is a private residence. There is no memorial or plaque. Vicious's ashes were reportedly scattered by his mother at various locations, with one account claiming she scattered them on Nancy Spungen's grave at King David Cemetery in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. The intertwined story of Sid and Nancy has become one of punk's defining myths.
