Get DirectionsThe Mirador de la Flor (Overlook of the Flower) on Shoreline Boulevard in Corpus Christi, Texas, is the memorial to Selena Quintanilla-Pérez — the 'Queen of Tejano music' — who was murdered on March 31, 1995, at the age of 23. The life-sized bronze statue depicts Selena gazing out over Corpus Christi Bay, the city where she grew up and which she put on the cultural map. She was shot by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club, at the Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi following a dispute over embezzled funds.
Selena was the most successful Tejano artist in history and was on the verge of a major English-language crossover at the time of her death. Her album Amor Prohibido (1994) is considered the greatest Tejano album ever made, and her performances — characterised by her extraordinary stage presence, her voice, and her fashion — made her a cultural icon in both Mexican American and mainstream American culture. Her posthumous crossover album Dreaming of You (1995) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making her the first Latin artist to achieve that distinction.
The Mirador de la Flor memorial draws thousands of visitors annually. Selena's grave is at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi. The Selena Museum, operated by her family, is located at 5410 Leopard Street in the city. Her story was depicted in the 1997 film Selena starring Jennifer Lopez, and a Netflix series Selena: The Series was released in 2020. She remains one of the most beloved figures in Latin American music.
