What happened here?

Opened in 1981 by Penny Grossman, Sam's Town Point at 2115 Allred Dr is a South Austin icon that has served as a working-class neighborhood joint and a world-class music venue for over 40 years. The name originates from a historical quirk where the Austin city and Travis County lines met at a "point" on the property. The site is famously the filming location for Ramsay Midwood’s "Spinnin’ on this rock" music video, capturing the bar’s unpretentious, wood-paneled atmosphere.

The property’s story took a unique turn in 2017 when Midwood—a longtime Saturday night staple at the bar—took over ownership to support Grossman and preserve the venue’s authentic charm. Today, it remains an intact and active music venue that avoids modern frills and craft cocktails in favor of a "time-capsule" vibe. While Grossman still resides on the four-acre property in a home overlooking the bar, Midwood continues to operate the site as a hub for Austin’s local music community, with plans to expand the area into a "Little Luckenbach" rural retail and music district.
