What happened here?

Roskilde Festival was founded in 1971 by two high-school students, Jesper Switzer Møller and Mogens Sandfær, on farmland outside the historic Danish city of Roskilde, some 30 kilometres west of Copenhagen. What began as a small, idealistic gathering grew over the following decades into one of the largest and most respected music festivals in Europe, drawing upwards of 130,000 people across its eight-day programme each summer. Unlike many commercial festivals of its scale, Roskilde is run as a non-profit organisation: all surplus revenue is donated to humanitarian and cultural causes, a model that has given the event an enduring ethical credibility.

The festival's headliner history encompasses an extraordinary breadth of artists, from Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen to Radiohead, Björk, Kendrick Lamar, and Beyoncé. The Orange Stage — the festival's main arena — is one of the largest temporary stages in the world and has hosted some of the defining live performances of recent decades. Roskilde is also notable for its commitment to discovery: smaller stages present emerging and experimental acts, giving the full programme a range that few events of its size can match. The festival has been marred once by tragedy — nine people died in a crowd crush at a Pearl Jam concert in 2000 — an event the organisation has since addressed through significant changes to crowd management.

The Roskilde site is a flat, open expanse of fields that exists primarily as a camping and festival ground. Outside festival season the area is quiet farmland, though the permanent infrastructure — stages, roads, and facilities — remains visible. The nearest city, Roskilde, is itself worth visiting for its Viking Ship Museum and its twelfth-century cathedral, the burial site of Danish royalty.
