What happened here?

In October 1994, just months after Kurt Cobain's death, Dave Grohl booked six days at Robert Lang Studios to secretly record a batch of songs he'd been writing for years. Playing every instrument himself, Grohl laid down what would become the self-titled Foo Fighters debut album — a record he initially intended to release anonymously, hoping people would think it was a full band. The sessions produced tracks including 'This Is a Call,' 'I'll Stick Around,' and 'Big Me,' launching one of the biggest rock acts of the following three decades.

Robert Lang Studios was established in 1974 in a beach house garage in Shoreline, a suburb just north of Seattle. The studio became a cornerstone of the Pacific Northwest recording scene, hosting sessions by Nirvana (parts of In Utero were mixed here), Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and dozens of other grunge and alternative acts. It was also reportedly the last studio where Kurt Cobain recorded, just days before his death in April 1994.

The studio remains operational and continues to record artists across genres. Its location in a quiet residential neighbourhood belies its outsized role in rock history. For Foo Fighters fans, it represents the exact spot where Dave Grohl transformed from 'Nirvana's drummer' into a bandleader in his own right.
