Get DirectionsRingo Starr — Richard Starkey — grew up at 10 Admiral Grove in the Dingle, a working-class district in south Liverpool, from the age of seven. The terraced house in this tight-knit community was the world he knew before the Beatles changed everything. The Dingle was tougher and more economically deprived than the Liverpool neighbourhoods the other Beatles came from, and Starr's childhood was marked by serious illness — he spent years in hospital as a child and teenager with appendicitis and then tuberculosis, missing so much school he was largely self-educated.
Starr replaced Pete Best as the Beatles' drummer in August 1962, joining from Rory Storm and the Hurricanes — the most popular band in Liverpool before the Beatles overtook them. His drumming style, often underestimated, was in fact highly musical and perfectly matched to the songs: his fills on 'Come Together,' his restraint on 'Yesterday,' his driving beat on 'Back in the U.S.S.R.' were exactly right. He was also the most naturally funny Beatle and an underrated actor, his performances in A Hard Day's Night and Help! holding up as genuine comic work.
Admiral Grove is a regular stop on Beatles pilgrimage itineraries, though it remains a private residence. The Dingle neighbourhood — Liverpool 8 — is a short distance from the Penny Lane and Strawberry Field sites, and an area of genuine character. Ringo Starr lives in Los Angeles and London and continues to perform with his All-Starr Band.
