What happened here?

The Kerrville Folk Festival has been held every May and June at Quiet Valley Ranch on the Medina Highway outside Kerrville, Texas, since 1972. The ranch is a working property in the Texas Hill Country — live oaks, limestone, a creek, the particular quality of light that the Hill Country produces at dusk — and for three weeks each year it becomes the most concentrated gathering of Texas and American folk and singer-songwriter musicians anywhere. Townes Van Zandt performed at Kerrville many times across the decades, and his appearances there were considered events: a poet performing for an audience that understood exactly what he was.

The festival was founded by Rod Kennedy, a Houston promoter who believed that singer-songwriters deserved a dedicated institution at the scale of a jazz festival — a place where the music was taken as seriously as any other art form, in a setting that suited its character. Kerrville became that place. Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, Robert Earl Keen, and dozens of other Texas songwriters either launched or deepened their reputations at the festival. The New Folk competition, which runs alongside the main programming, has served for decades as an early proving ground for writers who haven't yet found their audience.

Quiet Valley Ranch and the Kerrville Folk Festival still operate annually on the same schedule and at the same address. The physical site — the stage in the trees, the camping areas on the hillside, the creek — is unchanged in its basic character from the early 1970s. For the Texas singer-songwriter tradition that produced Townes Van Zandt, the ranch represents a kind of consecrated ground: the place where the music was taken on its own terms, outdoors, in the Hill Country, by people who had driven a long way to be there.
