What happened here?

In early 1999, Dave Grohl converted the basement of his home in the North Ridge neighbourhood of Alexandria, Virginia into a recording studio he christened 'Studio 606' — a name inspired by a number he reportedly kept seeing everywhere. With just three musicians — Grohl, drummer Taylor Hawkins, and bassist Nate Mendel — living and working in the house, they recorded 'There Is Nothing Left to Lose,' the Foo Fighters' third album and their first Grammy winner.

The decision to record at home rather than in a professional studio was deliberate. After the tension-filled sessions for 'The Colour and the Shape,' Grohl wanted a relaxed, communal atmosphere where the band could experiment without the pressure of studio clock rates. The basement setup was modest but effective, and the resulting album's warm, melodic sound — featuring tracks like 'Learn to Fly' and 'Breakout' — reflected the easygoing environment.

The Alexandria basement was the original Studio 606; the name later migrated to the band's purpose-built professional facility in Northridge, California. The Virginia house is a private residence in a quiet suburban neighbourhood, and the exact address is not publicly disclosed. The concept born in this basement — a band-owned creative headquarters — became central to the Foo Fighters' identity for the next two decades.
