What happened here?

Midnight Oil's early rehearsal space in Maroubra, a beachside suburb in Sydney's eastern suburbs, is where Australia's greatest protest rock band forged their incendiary sound in the late 1970s. The Oils — led by the towering, bald-headed Peter Garrett — rehearsed relentlessly in suburban garages and houses around Maroubra and nearby Randwick before breaking out of the Sydney pub circuit. Songs like 'Beds Are Burning,' 'Blue Sky Mining,' and 'Power and the Passion' were workshopped in these unglamorous surroundings.

Midnight Oil were unlike any other Australian band — a politically charged, physically intense live act who combined punk energy with anthemic rock and genuine social activism. Garrett's stage presence (he reportedly ran 10km before every show) and the band's commitment to Indigenous rights, environmentalism, and anti-nuclear causes made them Australia's conscience. Their famous performance outside the Exxon building in New York during the 1990 Oils on Water tour cemented their international reputation.

Maroubra is a working-class beachside suburb about 12km south of Sydney CBD, known for its surf break (Maroubra Beach) and its tough, unpretentious character. The exact rehearsal locations are private residential properties. The suburb's proximity to the ocean and its no-frills attitude perfectly reflect the band's aesthetic. Nearby, the Maroubra Bay Hotel and other eastern suburbs pubs were early Midnight Oil stomping grounds.
