Get DirectionsOvingdean Gap on the chalk cliffs east of Brighton is where Nick Cave's son Arthur, fifteen years old, died on July 14, 2015, after falling from the clifftop. The tragedy reshaped everything that came after in Cave's music and public life — Skeleton Tree (2016), recorded mostly before Arthur's death but released after, became inseparable from it; Ghosteen (2019), written entirely after, is one of the most profound documents of grief in contemporary music. Cave's willingness to speak publicly about the experience, including through the Red Hand Files newsletter he began in 2018, transformed his relationship with his audience.
The Ovingdean cliffs are part of the South Downs coastal path east of Brighton — chalk downland dropping to the sea, isolated and beautiful. Cave has spoken about the landscape in interviews. The cliff path is a public right of way and a popular walking route, with views across the Channel. It is not a formal memorial site.
The grief that came out of this place produced music of extraordinary honesty. Skeleton Tree's 'I Need You' and Ghosteen's 'Leviathan' and 'Hollywood' are among the most emotionally demanding things Cave has recorded. His collaboration with Warren Ellis deepened through this period, and the duo's Carnage (2021) extended the late-career creative partnership that has produced his most intimate work.
