Get DirectionsMilam Junior High School in Tupelo, Mississippi is where Elvis Presley attended seventh and eighth grade from 1946 to 1948. It was here that his music teacher, Mrs Oleta Grimes, first recognised something in the quiet, shy boy who kept to himself. She encouraged him to enter the school talent show — and that decision changed everything.
Elvis entered the Milam Junior High talent contest and performed "Old Shep", a Red Foley song about a boy and his dog. He stood on stage without a guitar, singing unaccompanied to his classmates. By most accounts he came fifth, though some recall him placing second. It didn't matter — it was the first time Elvis had performed for a real audience, and Mrs Grimes saw enough to keep pushing him. She was the one who told him to bring his guitar to school the next day.
The original Milam Junior High building still stands on South Green Street in Tupelo. It is no longer an active school but the building remains, and it sits on the Elvis Presley Tupelo Driving Tour route. There is no formal museum or interior access, but the exterior is well preserved and clearly recognisable. It's a short drive from the Elvis Presley Birthplace and other key Tupelo landmarks.
