What happened here?

Maxwell's at 1039 Washington Street in Hoboken, New Jersey, was one of the most beloved and significant small rock venues in the northeastern United States, operating from 1978 until its closure in July 2013. Attached to a bar and restaurant on Hoboken's main commercial strip, the back room — capacity around 200 — hosted virtually every important American indie and alternative rock act of the 1980s and early 1990s: the Replacements, Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth, R.E.M., the Feelies, Yo La Tengo, and Nirvana all played Maxwell's, many of them multiple times. R.E.M. filmed the music video for 'It's the End of the World as We Know It' in the venue in 1987.

Maxwell's occupied a unique position in the New York metropolitan music ecosystem: close enough to Manhattan to draw serious audiences and artists, but operating outside the competitive machinery of the New York club scene. Its intimacy — the low ceiling, the proximity of the stage to the crowd, the fact that musicians ate and drank in the same bar as everyone else — gave it a communal character that larger venues could not replicate. The Feelies, New Jersey's most quietly influential art-rock band, had a particular association with Maxwell's and played annual shows there for years.

The venue closed in July 2013, a victim of rising rents and the broader economic pressures that have eliminated so many independent music venues across America. Its closure was mourned widely in the music press and by the artists and audiences who had made it a second home for three decades. The building continues to operate as a bar and restaurant. A Maxwell's reunion show featuring the Feelies drew enormous attention in 2014. Its legacy as an incubator of American indie rock — particularly during the critical years of 1980 to 1995 — is secure.
