What happened here?

Malaco Records at 3023 West Northside Drive in Jackson, Mississippi, is one of the last great independent soul and gospel labels in American music — a survivor that kept Southern soul alive long after the major labels moved on. Founded in 1962 as a booking agency and converted into a record label, Malaco became essential in the 1970s when it picked up artists that larger labels had dropped or ignored. Z.Z. Hill's "Down Home Blues" (1982) — recorded at Malaco and selling over a million copies — proved that there was still a large audience for classic Southern soul if someone would only make the music.

Malaco's roster reads like a who's who of mature Southern soul and gospel: Bobby "Blue" Bland, Denise LaSalle, Johnnie Taylor, Latimore, Little Milton, Tyrone Davis, and the Staple Singers all recorded career-defining late-period work at Malaco. The label also became the premier home for traditional Black gospel, signing the Mississippi Mass Choir and recording a substantial portion of the gospel catalogue that dominated Black radio and church communities through the 1990s. The studio itself — where the actual recording happens — has a warm, lived-in sound that suits the emotional directness of its artists.

Malaco continues to operate from the same Jackson address and remains a working recording facility and label. It represents a kind of institutional continuity rare in the music industry — a Southern independent that has outlasted every trend and maintains its identity across six decades. For fans of deep soul and gospel, Jackson, Mississippi, is its address.
