Get DirectionsA Love Street sign at 8056 Rothdell Trail marks the spot immortalised in the Doors' 1968 song 'Love Street,' written by Jim Morrison about the stretch of Rothdell Trail running alongside the Canyon Country Store in Laurel Canyon. Morrison lived in a small cabin just up the trail and would watch the neighbourhood's colourful inhabitants pass below — the 'store where the creatures meet' in the song's lyric. The sign, installed by the city of Los Angeles in recognition of the location's cultural significance, sits on the hillside street that Morrison described as a place of dreamy, hazy enchantment during the peak of his time in the canyon.
Rothdell Trail and the Canyon Country Store were the social heart of Laurel Canyon's late-1960s music community. Morrison's cabin sat directly behind the store on the steep hillside above, and the view down to the street — with its parade of musicians, artists, and canyon residents going about their daily lives — gave 'Love Street' its particular quality of contented observation, unusual in Morrison's output. The song appeared on the Doors' third album, Waiting for the Sun (1968), and stands apart from their more theatrical and confrontational work as something warmer and more personal.
The Love Street sign remains in place and is a popular stop for Doors fans visiting the Laurel Canyon area. The Canyon Country Store on Laurel Canyon Boulevard continues to operate and features a mural depicting the musicians associated with the canyon. The broader neighbourhood retains much of its 1960s character. Morrison's cabin at 8021 Rothdell Trail is a private residence a short distance up the same trail.
