The chapel from the final scene of Viva Las Vegas
Notable year: 1963
The Little Church of the West is a small cedar wedding chapel at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip. Built in 1942, it is the oldest existing structure on the Strip and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also where Elvis Presley's character Lucky Jackson married Ann-Margret's Rusty Martin in the finale of the 1964 film Viva Las Vegas.
Viva Las Vegas was filmed between July and September 1963 and released on June 17, 1964. It became Elvis's highest-grossing film. The movie ends with Lucky and Rusty's wedding at the Little Church of the West — a scene that cemented the chapel's place in Elvis history. The chemistry between Elvis and Ann-Margret during filming was well documented and widely reported at the time.
The chapel looks much the same as it did in the film, despite having been moved twice — including a slow crawl down Las Vegas Boulevard on October 6, 1978. It now sits near Mandalay Bay at 4617 Las Vegas Boulevard South. It is still a fully operational wedding venue where couples can get married in the same spot seen on screen. The rustic redwood architecture has stood largely unaltered since the 1940s.
