What happened here?

Leonard Cohen's Los Angeles home at 1033 South Tremaine Avenue in the Mid-Wilshire district was the modest, unassuming house where he spent the final chapter of his life. Far from the Hollywood Hills mansions associated with successful musicians, it was a small, ordinary property on a quiet residential street — exactly the kind of place Cohen seemed to prefer. He was photographed sitting on the front lawn as late as 2015, just a year before his death in November 2016.

Cohen had a complicated relationship with Los Angeles, living there on and off for decades. It was the city he called home while recording many of his later albums, and where he returned after his infamous years in a Zen monastery on Mount Baldy. The house became something of a quiet pilgrimage site after his death, with fans leaving flowers and notes on the footpath out front.

The property remains a private residence and looks much as it did when Cohen lived there. Google Street View, if you dial it back to 2015, still shows Cohen himself sitting out front — an accidental piece of immortality that fans have quietly passed around online ever since. Visitors are asked to be respectful of the current occupants.
