What happened here?

Kate Bush grew up in a Victorian farmhouse in East Wickham, Welling, in the London Borough of Bexley — a semi-rural setting that profoundly shaped her imagination. Born Catherine Bush on July 30, 1958, in Bexleyheath, she was raised at the family home surrounded by fields, and began writing songs and playing piano as a young child. It was here that family friend David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, having heard her demo tapes, arranged for her to record professional demos at AIR Studios in 1973, when she was just 15. Those recordings led directly to her signing with EMI.

The farmhouse environment fed the eccentric, literary, intensely visual quality of Kate Bush's songwriting. Her early work drew on the Bronte sisters, Houdini, Wuthering Heights, and mythology — a romantic sensibility rooted in the English countryside rather than urban pop culture. Her father, a doctor with a passion for folk music, and her brothers John and Paddy (who played many of the instruments on her early records) all shaped her musical development in that family home.

The house in East Wickham is a private residence and not open to the public. It is, however, a significant pilgrimage destination for fans who recognise it from descriptions in interviews and biographies. Kate Bush remains one of the most critically acclaimed British artists of all time, with The Kick Inside (1978) and Hounds of Love (1985) considered landmarks of British pop and art music.
