What happened here?

Jimi Hendrix's last official London address was at 25 Brook Street in Mayfair -- immediately adjacent to the flat at number 23 where he had lived with Kathy Etchingham in 1968-69. The two addresses are so close that they are effectively part of the same Georgian townhouse complex on Brook Street. Hendrix is believed to have maintained a tenancy at this address in the months before his death in September 1970, returning to Mayfair even as his life had become increasingly chaotic with touring, recording, and the management of his complicated personal and professional relationships.

Brook Street's significance in Hendrix's London story is underlined by the fact that both numbers 23 and 25 are part of the building now managed as Handel and Hendrix in London -- the museum that celebrates both Hendrix's 1968-69 residency and George Frideric Handel's much earlier occupation of the same address. The proximity of the two famous tenants, separated by more than two centuries, has made the Brook Street addresses one of the more unusual heritage sites in London.

The Handel and Hendrix in London museum at 23-25 Brook Street is open to the public and offers a detailed presentation of Hendrix's life at this address, including his flat restored to its approximate 1968 appearance. Visitors to 25 Brook Street can see the continuation of the story from its earliest days to his death in September 1970. The museum is accessible from Bond Street tube station.
