Get DirectionsJimi Hendrix was buried at Greenwood Memorial Park in Renton, Washington, on October 1, 1970, following his death in London on September 18 at the age of 27. He was originally interred in a simple grave, but in 2002 his family built the Jimi Hendrix Memorial — a large granite dome supported by three pillars, with a marble floor and space for quiet reflection. The memorial features etched portraits of Hendrix and lyrics from his songs. His remains were moved to a new crypt beneath the structure.
Hendrix grew up in Seattle, just north of Renton, and though he left the Pacific Northwest as a young man and never really came back, his family remained in the area. His father Al Hendrix chose Greenwood Memorial Park for the burial. Renton is a quiet suburban city southeast of Seattle — an unlikely resting place for rock's most revolutionary guitarist, but one that reflects his roots in the working-class neighbourhoods of the Pacific Northwest rather than the psychedelic stages of Monterey and Woodstock.
The memorial is open to the public during cemetery hours and is free to visit. It sits in a landscaped section of the park with benches and plantings. Fans leave guitar picks, flowers, and notes at the site. The dome structure is distinctive and easy to find — follow signs from the cemetery entrance. It is a peaceful spot, well maintained by the family, and one of the most visited musician gravesites in the United States.
