Jim Morrison Venice Beach mural

A 35-foot-tall mural of Jim Morrison stares out over the Venice Beach boardwalk from the side of an apartment building at 1811 Ocean Front Walk, near the intersection of Speedway and 18th Place. Titled Morning Shot, the mural was painted by Venice Beach muralist Rip Cronk in 1991 and has become one of the most photographed landmarks on the LA coastline.

The painting shows Morrison from the chest up — shirtless, hair wild, eyes half-closed — captured in the same restless, dangerous energy that defined The Doors' live performances. The mural is 12 feet wide and 35 feet tall, painted in acrylic directly onto the building's exterior wall. In 2012, Cronk returned to the piece for a major restoration, changing the background to a gradient of orange and yellow, touching up the paint, and adding finer detail to Morrison's likeness.

Venice Beach was Morrison's territory. He lived on the rooftop of a building on Speedway in the late 1960s, wrote poetry on the beach, and spent long nights in the bars and cafes that lined the boardwalk. The Doors themselves were named after Aldous Huxley's The Doors of Perception, and the band's early sets at nearby clubs on the Sunset Strip grew out of the same countercultural scene that Venice embodied. Cronk's mural places Morrison back where he belonged — overlooking the sand, the skaters, and the chaos of the boardwalk.

Cronk is a legend in Venice, with murals scattered across the neighbourhood. His work is part of a long tradition of street art in the area, though many of his earlier pieces have been lost to development and repainting. The Morrison mural has survived, in part because of its fame and in part because the building's owners have supported its preservation.

The mural is freely visible from the boardwalk at any time. Venice Beach itself is a circus — street performers, bodybuilders, skate parks, and tourist stalls — and the Morrison mural sits comfortably in that atmosphere. It's best seen in the morning light, when the boardwalk is quieter and the colours pop against the building's white wall.
