Get Directions1906 Woodland Terrace in Melbourne, Florida, is one of the childhood addresses associated with Jim Morrison, the singer and poet of the Doors who was born in Melbourne on 8 December 1943. Morrison's father was a Navy officer, and the family moved frequently throughout his childhood — to Virginia, California, New Mexico, and back to Florida — which contributed to the sense of rootlessness and displacement that would characterise his adult life and his poetry. The Melbourne address is one of several homes he lived in as a child, each representing a temporary stay rather than a settled home.
Morrison attended high school in Virginia and later studied at UCLA's film school in Los Angeles, where he met keyboard player Ray Manzarek in 1965. The two formed the Doors with guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore, and within two years Morrison had become one of the most charismatic and controversial figures in rock music — a performer whose literary ambitions, sexual persona, and volatility made him simultaneously thrilling and destructive. His increasing alcohol and drug consumption derailed his performances and eventually his life.
The Woodland Terrace house was reportedly listed for sale in 2022, attracting significant media attention because of its Morrison connection. As a private residence it has no heritage designation, and Melbourne as a city has a limited formal relationship with Morrison's legacy. The central Morrison pilgrimage destination is Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, where he is buried and where his grave is one of the most visited in the world. Morrison died in Paris on 3 July 1971 at the age of 27.
