The School

Bob Dylan graduated from Hibbing High School in 1959. The school is an impressive building in its own right — built with iron mining money, it features a grand auditorium modelled on the Capitol Theatre in New York. Inside, a Steinway piano that Dylan played during his school years remains in the building.

Nobel Prize Tribute

In 2021, a brick tribute was added to the school grounds honouring Dylan's 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature — the first time the award had been given to a songwriter. It is a fitting tribute at the school where he first started writing and performing, and a reminder that the kid who was too loud at the Winter Frolic went on to win the highest honour in world literature.

Visiting Today

Hibbing High School is at 800 East 21st Street. It is an active school so access to the interior may be limited, but the exterior, the Nobel tribute and the surrounding area are worth visiting. The auditorium is occasionally open for events and tours.
