What happened here?

Gruene Hall in the historic Gruene district of New Braunfels, Texas, is the oldest continuously operating dance hall in Texas, established in 1878 by German immigrant Henry D. Gruene. The building is a remarkable piece of vernacular architecture — open sides covered with screens, a tin roof, a wooden floor, and a small stage at one end — that has survived in essentially its original form while the dance hall tradition it represents has largely disappeared around it. Lyle Lovett recorded a live album here. Garth Brooks, George Strait, Jerry Jeff Walker, and virtually every significant Texas singer-songwriter have played the stage.

The dance hall tradition in Texas — German and Czech immigrant communities establishing venues for social dancing and community gathering in the Hill Country — produced some of the most distinctive musical environments in the United States. Gruene Hall is the pre-eminent surviving example: a functional dance hall that has never stopped operating, surrounded by the food and drink establishments that have grown up around it in the Gruene historic district. The venue has no air conditioning, no assigned seating, and no attempt at modernity beyond a sound system. Dancing is expected and encouraged.

Gruene Hall hosts live music on weekends throughout the year and select weekday shows. Admission is charged for most performances. The hall is on the National Register of Historic Places. Gruene is a short drive from New Braunfels and approximately 45 minutes from both Austin and San Antonio on IH-35. It is one of the most authentic remaining examples of a Texas music tradition that helped shape the sound of country, rockabilly, and Americana.
