What happened here?

Ground Zero Blues Club at 0 Blues Alley in Clarksdale, Mississippi, is one of the most celebrated juke joints in the American South — co-owned by actor Morgan Freeman, Clarksdale attorney Bill Luckett, and Howard Stovall, and opened in 2001 in a converted cotton warehouse a block from the Delta Blues Museum. The club was conceived as a genuine working blues venue rather than a tourist replica, and it has largely succeeded: local and touring blues musicians play most nights, the interior is deliberately rough-edged, and the walls are covered with signed dollar bills and photographs. Morgan Freeman has maintained an active involvement since the opening and is a regular presence in Clarksdale, where he has lived and operated several businesses.

Clarksdale occupies a unique position in American music history as the most concentrated single location of blues heritage — Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Ike Turner, John Lee Hooker, Sam Cooke, and Bessie Smith all have documented connections to the town and its surrounding county. Ground Zero sits at the heart of this geography, adjacent to the Delta Blues Museum (itself built in the old freight depot of the Illinois Central Railroad) and a few blocks from the intersection of Highways 61 and 49, the famous crossroads associated with Robert Johnson. The club helped anchor a modest blues tourism revival in Clarksdale from the early 2000s onwards.

Ground Zero Blues Club is open Thursday through Saturday for dinner and live music, with occasional additional nights. The venue serves Southern food and cold beer in a setting of deliberately maintained authenticity — exposed brick, mismatched furniture, and the sense that the building has absorbed decades of music before the club ever opened. Live blues is performed on a small stage most nights the club operates. Clarksdale is approximately two hours south of Memphis via Highway 61, the original Blues Highway.
