Frank Zappa Monument — Vilnius, Lithuania

The bronze bust of Frank Zappa at Kalinausko Street in Vilnius is one of the most celebrated and improbable public art installations in Europe. The monument was erected in 1995, four years after Lithuanian independence from the Soviet Union, as a gesture of cultural freedom by the citizens of a country that had been subjected to decades of Soviet cultural repression. Zappa — who had died in December 1993 from prostate cancer — had never visited Lithuania and had no direct connection to the country. The choice of his image was entirely symbolic: Zappa represented irreverence, artistic freedom, and creative nonconformity in the face of authority.

Zappa's music and persona had been significant to Eastern European artists and intellectuals during the Soviet period precisely because it was prohibited — his recordings circulated on underground tapes, and his name became associated with the freedoms that Soviet culture denied. When Lithuania regained independence, the bust was a statement about what kind of cultural values the newly free nation wished to celebrate. The initiative was organised by Lithuanian artists and activists with the support of Zappa's family, who donated the original bust from a US monument project.

The Vilnius bust is one of several Zappa monuments that exist around the world, including in Bad Doberan, Germany. It has become a beloved city landmark and a destination for visitors interested in both rock music history and the cultural politics of post-Soviet Europe. Zappa's own politics — his famous Senate testimony in 1985 against the Parents Music Resource Center and its attempts to censor rock lyrics — made him a genuine symbol of artistic freedom, making the Vilnius tribute entirely appropriate.
