What happened here?

July 25, 1965

On the evening of July 25, 1965, Bob Dylan took the stage at the Newport Folk Festival with a Fender Stratocaster and a backing band that included Mike Bloomfield on guitar and Al Kooper on organ. He opened with Maggie's Farm, played at full electric volume. It was the first time Dylan had performed with an electric band at a major folk festival. The set lasted three songs and roughly fifteen minutes. Parts of the audience booed. Others cheered. Pete Seeger reportedly tried to have the sound cut.

Dylan returned to the stage alone with an acoustic guitar and played Mr. Tambourine Man and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. The performance is widely regarded as a turning point in popular music — the moment Dylan broke from the folk revival and moved toward the electric rock sound of Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde.

The Actual Location

The official Bob Dylan website and most published accounts list the 1965 Newport Folk Festival at Freebody Park. However, the festival almost certainly took place on Festival Field, a separate open area off Girard Avenue. Film footage of Dylan's electric set shows a stone monument in the background that aligns with the Miantonomi Memorial Tower in Miantonomi Memorial Park, which sits on the hill above Festival Field. The sightlines do not match Freebody Park. An independent investigation using background landmarks in the footage confirmed the coordinates point to this location at 90 Girard Avenue.

Festival Field no longer exists. The site is now covered by condominiums. There is no plaque or marker at the location.

Visiting Today

The condominiums at 90 Girard Avenue stand on the site of the former Festival Field. The Miantonomi Memorial Tower is visible on the hill above and serves as a reference point to confirm the location. The Newport Folk Festival continues annually at Fort Adams State Park across the harbour.
