Fabric opened on 31 October 1999 in a Victorian cold store beneath Charterhouse Street in Clerkenwell, and rapidly established itself as one of the most significant nightclubs in the world. Built into the labyrinthine basement spaces of a former meat market, the venue's architecture — multiple rooms, winding corridors, and a main floor with a distinctive bodysonic dancefloor that transmitted bass vibrations directly through the floor — created an immersive experience unlike almost anything else in London nightlife. Its booking policy, which leaned toward drum and bass, techno, house, and experimental electronic music, helped define the sound and culture of British club music in the 2000s.

Fabric's weekly FABRICLive nights became legendary for presenting artists at the intersection of club culture and wider musical experimentation, while its FABRIC mix CD series — which ran to over 100 volumes — documented the evolution of electronic music with remarkable depth and consistency. The venue survived a devastating near-closure in 2016 when Islington Council revoked its licence following the drug-related deaths of two young patrons, only for the decision to be reversed after a sustained campaign by the global music community that demonstrated the club's cultural significance and commitment to harm reduction.

Fabric remains open and operational at 77A Charterhouse Street, continuing to book some of the most respected names in electronic music. Its survival through the 2016 closure threat was widely seen as a turning point in how British authorities understood and engaged with club culture, and the venue is now recognised as a protected part of London's cultural landscape.
