What happened here?

Dave Grohl was born on January 14, 1969, in Warren, Ohio — the county seat of Trumbull County in the Mahoning Valley of northeast Ohio — and the city has honoured its most famous native son with David Grohl Alley, a dedicated street featuring the world's largest pair of drumsticks, installed as a monument to the musician who went from Ohio to become one of the most influential figures in rock music of the past thirty years. Grohl left Warren as an infant when his family relocated to Springfield, Virginia, and grew up there, but Warren has maintained the connection with characteristic Rust Belt tenacity.

Grohl's musical biography begins in Virginia rather than Ohio: he picked up drums in his early teens in Springfield, joined the hardcore punk band Scream as a teenager, and was recruited by Nirvana in 1990 after Chad Channing's departure. The combination of technical precision and physical aggression that he brought to Nevermind's rhythm tracks — recorded at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys in 1991 — transformed a punk band into a phenomenon. After Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994, Grohl formed the Foo Fighters and spent the following three decades building one of rock's most durable careers, founded on an unusually clear understanding of what makes drums sound like drums rather than machines.

Warren, like much of the Mahoning Valley, has experienced the economic difficulties of post-industrial Ohio: population loss, manufacturing decline, civic contraction. David Grohl Alley is an expression of the kind of local pride that small American cities maintain against the weight of those difficulties — the assertion that this place produced something that mattered. Grohl has spoken warmly of his Warren origins and has maintained family connections to the area throughout his career.
