Get Directions4 Plaistow Grove is a two-storey terraced railway workers' cottage in Bromley, South London, where David Bowie lived from the age of 8 to 20, between 1955 and 1967. It was in this house that Bowie wrote his formative early songs, and he later returned here to compose "Space Oddity", the 1969 single that launched his career.
The Heritage of London Trust acquired the property and is restoring it to its early 1960s appearance. The project is being overseen by curator Geoffrey Marsh of the Victoria and Albert Museum, with funding from a $500,000 grant from the Jones Day Foundation and a public fundraising campaign. The restored house is due to open in late 2027 as a creative and educational space, hosting workshops for young people focused on arts skills and confidence-building.
The centrepiece of the restoration will be Bowie's bedroom — a 9ft by 10ft room described as the specific site where his creative spirit took shape. The house itself is a modest terrace on a quiet residential street, a short walk from Bromley South station.
