Get DirectionsWithin hours of David Bowie's death on 10 January 2016, fans began gathering in Brixton. A large mural of Bowie — depicting him in his Aladdin Sane guise, the lightning bolt across his face — became the focal point for public mourning. Located near the Brixton O2 Academy on Tunstall Road, it drew thousands of people over the days that followed, leaving flowers, cards, and handwritten notes.
The mural is one of several Bowie artworks that have appeared around Brixton, but this is the most photographed and visited. It had existed prior to his death as a tribute to him, and its status transformed overnight into something closer to a shrine. The image — taken from the 1973 Aladdin Sane album cover — became the face of a city's grief.
The mural remains a pilgrimage site. Brixton has leaned into its Bowie heritage: there are guided tours, the surrounding streets see constant foot traffic from fans, and on the anniversary of his death, the area fills with music and remembrance. The mural is updated and maintained by local street artists.
