Get DirectionsRanchman's Cookhouse and Dancehall at 9615 Macleod Trail SE in Calgary is one of Canada's most storied country music venues — a sprawling honky-tonk institution that has been presenting live country music since the early 1970s and has won the Canadian Country Music Association's Country Club of the Year award fourteen times. Colter Wall, the Saskatchewan-born singer whose deep baritone and cowboy songwriting sit naturally in the Ranchman's tradition, performed here on March 10–11, 2023, as part of a Western Canadian Tour — one of a string of sold-out shows in the venues and towns that best understand what his music is reaching for.
Ranchman's occupies a particular place in Canadian country music history. It is the official hospitality venue of the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, a Calgary Stampede institution, and a regular destination for touring acts that want a crowd that takes country music seriously. Its walls are covered in saddles, boots, and memorabilia; its dance floor is large and well-used. Wall — who operates a cattle ranch in southwestern Saskatchewan and whose father served as Premier of the province — is exactly the kind of artist who fits the room. His albums Songs of the Plains and Colter Wall have found an audience precisely because they feel rooted in the land and working-class culture that Ranchman's has always represented.
Ranchman's continues to operate at 9615 Macleod Trail SE, though the venue has announced plans to relocate in 2027 to a larger nearby space due to property redevelopment on the current site. It will continue operating at its existing address until the end of 2026. The building has also served as a filming location for Brokeback Mountain and Cool Runnings.
