What happened here?

Charles Edward Anderson Berry — Chuck Berry — was born on 18 October 1926 in the Ville neighbourhood of St Louis, Missouri, and grew up in the North Side African American community that would give him both his musical education and the social experience that informed his songwriting. Berry grew up in a middle-class Black household — his father was a deacon and his mother a school principal — and absorbed the blues, gospel, and jump blues that were the soundtrack of Black St Louis in the 1930s and 1940s. He began playing guitar in high school and was performing in clubs before the war ended.

St Louis is where Berry developed the guitar style — the double-string leads, the duck walk, the seamless fusion of blues and country picking techniques — that would become the foundational language of rock and roll guitar. His Chess Records recordings of the mid-1950s, made in Chicago but conceived in St Louis — 'Maybellene', 'Roll Over Beethoven', 'Johnny B. Goode', 'Rock and Roll Music' — established the grammar of rock and roll and directly influenced every subsequent guitarist who played the music. Keith Richards's assessment that Berry invented rock and roll guitar is not an exaggeration.

Chuck Berry lived in St Louis throughout his life, maintaining his home in the St Charles area well into old age and continuing to perform monthly shows at the local Blueberry Hill restaurant and club into his late eighties. He died on 18 March 2017 at his home in St Louis at the age of 90. The city has memorialised him with a Chuck Berry statue on Delmar Boulevard, near the Blueberry Hill club where he performed for decades. The statue and the surrounding Loop entertainment district are the primary Berry heritage destinations in St Louis.
