What happened here?

Cassell's Music in San Fernando is the real guitar store where Wayne Campbell, played by Mike Myers, longingly gazes at a 1964 Fender Stratocaster in classic white — only to be shut down by a clerk pointing to the infamous 'No Stairway to Heaven' sign when he starts playing. The scene became one of the most quoted moments in rock comedy, and the store became a pilgrimage site for guitarists and Wayne's World fans alike. Over a four-day shoot in 1991, the family-run store was transformed into Wayne and Garth's neighbourhood music shop.

Wayne's World (1992) was a cultural phenomenon that brought rock and roll humour into the mainstream, famously reviving Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and making the AMC Pacer an unlikely icon. The film is set in Aurora, Illinois, but nearly all scenes were shot around the San Fernando Valley and greater Los Angeles. Cassell's, a genuine family-owned music store that had been in business since the 1940s, lent the scene an authenticity that a set couldn't replicate.

After 78 years in business, Cassell's Music announced its closure, marking the end of an era for both the local music community and film fans. The store at 901 North Maclay Street had continued to welcome visitors who wanted to see the real 'No Stairway' location. Its closing means one of rock cinema's most beloved landmarks will likely be redeveloped, though its place in pop culture history is secure.
