The Video

In 1993, Bob Dylan made a surprise appearance at Camden Lock Market in north London, where he was filmed by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics for the promotional video for Blood in My Eyes. Dylan walked around the market in a top hat and frock coat, signing autographs and moving among the crowds, accompanied by his regular bodyguard Jim Callaghan but remaining approachable throughout the afternoon.

The footage was shot at the market and in a restaurant called Fluke's Cradle, where Dylan was filmed dining. Stewart directed the video, cleverly lip-synching the performance and intercutting it with shots of Dylan among the Camden crowds. The result is one of Dylan's most unusual and intimate music videos.

Blood in My Eyes

Blood in My Eyes is a track from World Gone Wrong, Dylan's second consecutive album of acoustic folk and blues covers, released in October 1993. The song is a version of a 1931 recording by the Mississippi Sheiks. World Gone Wrong won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album and, along with its predecessor Good as I Been to You (1992), marked a period in which Dylan stripped his music back to its roots after the uneven studio albums of the late 1980s.

Camden Lock Market

Camden Lock Market sits alongside the Regent's Canal in north London and has been one of the city's most popular market destinations since the 1970s. The market and surrounding area have deep connections to London's music scene — Amy Winehouse's statue stands nearby at Stables Market, and venues including Dingwalls, the Electric Ballroom, the Jazz Cafe, and the Dublin Castle are all within walking distance.
