Calvin Johnson is the founder of K Records and the central figure of Beat Happening, the trio that defined Olympia's lo-fi aesthetic in the 1980s and early 1990s and became one of the most influential bands in American independent music — not through commercial success, but through the purity and consistency of their DIY philosophy. Johnson's deep baritone voice, minimal guitar playing, and explicit rejection of conventional rock technique made Beat Happening a genuinely countercultural proposition at a moment when even indie rock was beginning to professionalise. The band — Johnson, Heather Lewis, and Bret Lunsford — recorded and released music almost entirely through K Records, operating entirely outside the conventional music industry.

Johnson's house in Olympia served as a creative hub for the community that gathered around K Records and the Evergreen State College. International Pop Underground, the music festival Johnson organised in Olympia in 1991, brought together artists from across the American and European independent scenes and is considered the moment when riot grrrl announced itself as a movement: Bikini Kill played the first night, which was designated a 'Girl Night' exclusively featuring female performers. Nirvana, Fugazi, and dozens of other significant acts also played the festival, which took place over six days in August 1991 — the same summer Nevermind was being completed.

Johnson continues to live in Olympia and run K Records.
