What happened here?

Buddy Holly Avenue in Lubbock, Texas — located adjacent to the Buddy Holly Center and the Texas Musicians Hall of Fame — is the cultural heart of Lubbock's celebration of its most famous son. The street was renamed in Holly's honour, and the West Texas Walk of Fame runs along the avenue, with bronze plaques embedded in the sidewalk honouring Texas musicians from Bob Wills and Buddy Holly to Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, Mac Davis, and many others. A prominent bronze statue of Holly — guitar in hand, glasses in place — stands at the corner of Buddy Holly Avenue and 8th Street.

Holly's connection to Lubbock is deep and thoroughly documented. He was born in the city, attended its schools, played in his first bands at local venues, and made his first recordings in the area before his commercial breakthrough came through Norman Petty's studio in Clovis, New Mexico. The Buddy Holly Center, which operates as a museum and performance space, houses a permanent collection of Holly memorabilia including personal effects, performance footage, and examples of his guitars. A recreation of the Clovis studio setup where 'That'll Be the Day' was recorded is among the exhibits.

The Buddy Holly Center is open Tuesday through Saturday and admission is charged for the museum galleries. The Walk of Fame and the statue are freely accessible at all times. Lubbock has made Buddy Holly a central part of its civic identity, and the area around Buddy Holly Avenue is the primary destination for visitors making the Texas music heritage circuit. The annual Buddy Holly Music Festival brings performers to Lubbock each September.
